Auto Insurance
In addition to being required by law, automobile insurance financially protects those in an accident by paying the other driver’s repair and medical bill if at fault. Based on the coverage, it can also replace or repair the driver’s car if stolen or damaged. Texas uses a Consumer Bill of Rights with regards to auto insurance, and this document is required to be provided with all new policies or the renewal of existing coverage.
Texas Auto Insurance Requirements
At the bare minimum, Texas requires liability coverage. If money is owed on the vehicle, then the lender will require the owner to have collision and comprehensive auto coverage. There are five other types of coverages that give the driver’s many options in addition to liability, collision, and comprehensive policies (if necessary).
Medical Payments Coverage
This type of coverage pays the driver and passenger’s medical expenses. It also pays the driver’s medical bills if they are in an accident while riding in another car or while biking or walking.
Personal Injury Protection Coverage
Like medical payment coverage, it pays the driver and their passenger’s medical bills. Additionally, it covers lost wages and non-medical expenses. Auto policies in Texas automatically include personal injury protection coverage, so if a driver does not want it, they must inform the insurance company in writing.
Uninsured/Underinsured Coverage
This type of coverage financially protects an individual that is hit by someone without insurance or not enough to cover repair and medical bills. It also pays for hit-and-run accidents.
Towing and Labor Coverage
This coverage pays for a tow truck, if your vehicle cannot be driven, as well as the labor to jump-start the battery or change a flat tire.
Rental Reimbursement Coverage
This type of coverage pays for a car rental if the insured's automobile was stolen or is being repaired following an accident. Some policies include payments for taxis.
